In the realm of education and healthcare in the state of Maharashtra, one name stands out like a shining beacon, that of Dr. D. Y. Patil. His vision, dedication and passion have been indelibly influenced, by his wisdom and generosity and have left several benchmarks, be it in the schools for imparting basic education or institutes for higher learning.
Dr. D. Y. Patil (Dada) is born in an educated and prosperous farmer family. His father Yashwantrao, was a visionary sage and follower of 'Warkari Sampraday' of Maharashtra. Under the guidance of Barrister Khardekar and Principal M. R. Desai he completed his B.A. from Rajaram College, Kolhapur. Standing true to his name 'Dnyandev', he become law graduate with first class in Shivaji University. Shri V. T. Patil appointed him Chairman of Mouni Vidyapeeth and there in conjunction with socialist educationist Padma Bhushan J. P. Naik he became a true educator.
In the state elections of years 1967 and 1978 he became MLA from Panhala-Bawada constituency, but honoring the desire of Shri Mahadba Patil-Dhulgaonkar he turned to education from politics. Dr. D. Y. Patil founded the first engineering college called Ramrao Adik Institute of Technology in Navi Mumbai offering bachelors degree in engineering in the year 1983. There was no turning back from there and today he has founded more than three deemed universities with more than 150 independent state-of-the art medical and engineering institutions in India.
Dada is greatly influence by Shri Gajanan Maharaj, his philosophy behind his huge philanthropical work is "Who am ? Whatever Almighty has willed to be done through our instrument shall be done."
For his pioneering contribution in the field of education, Government of India conferred the prestigious “Padmashree” award in 1991. He was appointed as the Governor of Tripura (2009) and Governor of Bihar (2012). Shivaji University, Kolhapur awarded him honorary doctorate degree (D. Litt.) in 2015.
Humble and unassuming Dr. D. Y. Patil is better known for his work, rather than the awards and recognition he has received over the years.
